The intensive growth of industry and its energy sector, the development of natural resources and the development of agriculture in new areas with limited sources of fresh water, and the growth of population all combine to create a shortage of fresh water throughout the world. At the same time, the volume of wastewater increases, which, in turn, adversely affects the environment and the state of water basins. This problem has always been relevant in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and therefore, since the 1960s, scientific research in the field of synthesis and research of ion-exchange membranes and the creation of electrodialysis desalination plants and stations with different capacities for drinking water have been started at ICS.
The Institute has developed technologies for producing ion-exchange resins based on synthetic and natural starting compounds containing various functional groups, and therefore are able to sorb ions of various organic and inorganic compounds from aqueous solutions (supervisor – Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan E.E. Eergozhin). Based on the obtained ion exchangers, technologies have been developed for extracting ions of rare, scattered and noble metals from productive heap leaching solutions and industrial effluents of hydrometallurgical production. Unlike granular ion exchangers, the use of ion-exchange membranes is not associated with the cost of regenerating electrolytes, which reduces harmful emissions into the environment. In addition, membrane processes can be carried out by continuous schemes, in automatic mode, compact instrumentation design with the participation of a small number of staff.
Among modern membrane technologies, a special place is occupied by electrodialysis and reverse osmosis, due to the unique possibilities of deionization and concentration of electrolyte solutions, as well as the synthesis and chemical transformations of various substances.
In the conditions of the existing shortage of fresh water, noted in many countries of the world, desalination of mineral water is an important source of drinking water, which is carried out using membrane technologies of electrodialysis and reverse osmosis.
The method of reverse osmosis, along with electrodialysis, is one of the most promising methods of water purification and desalination. It is based on filtering solutions under pressure through semipermeable membranes, the pores of which pass water molecules, but do not pass salt ions and molecules of undissociated compounds. Therefore, the problem of synthesis and research of physicochemical, electrochemical and transport properties of polyelectrolytes and membranes, the creation on their basis of electrochemical technologies for the desalination of saline water is relevant.
Particularly noteworthy are the achievements of the employees of the Institute’s laboratory of ion-exchange resins in the field of creating electrodialysis desalination plants, developed and implemented for the first time in the Soviet Union at the Almaty Electromechanical Plant. For the work “Development and implementation of electrodialysis desalination plants of the EDU series in the national economy” doctor of chemical sciences, professor E.E. Ergozhin (supervisor), F.B. As a result of basic research, a scientific data bank was created on a directed synthetic search for pharmacologically active substances in a series of azacyclic derivatives.
Synthetic substitute for morphine “Prosidol” was created jointly with the Novokuznetsk Chemical-Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Russia. To date, three finished dosage forms of this drug have been created and introduced into medical practice. Of particular interest for practical medicine is the drug “Kazkain”, which, as a local anesthetic, is recommended for infiltrational and conduction anesthesia, which has advantages in basic parameters over the local anesthetics widely used in the world at present in clinical practice (scientific advisor – academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan K.D. Praliev).
Clophelin is one of the effective drugs for the treatment of hypertension. However, along with positive properties, this drug has certain disadvantages: short-term duration of action, a sharp decrease in blood pressure at the initial moment of admission, side effects with the abolition or reduction of the dose of the drug. In order to eliminate the above-mentioned deficiencies of clofelin, academician B.A. Zhubanov together with K.D. Praliev and with specialists from KazNRI Cardiology of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan completed large cycle of fundamental and applied research to create a new polymeric prolonged form of clonidine (KLOFEBUCAL drug) in the form of plates for application to the oral mucosa, the so-called buccal form. As shown by the first and second phases of clinical trials, clofebucal significantly increases the duration of the hypotensive action, eliminates a sharp decrease in blood pressure at the initial moment after administration and, if necessary, interruption of the course of treatment is possible. The pharmacological committee of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan has authorized the medical use and industrial production of this drug.

Electromembrane technology for their purification from phenol and ammonium nitrogen was developed and tested on real technological condensates of Pavlodar Petrochemical Plant JSC: “Research and issuance of recommendations for optimizing the operation of technological condensate purification units from phenols and ammonium nitrogen of С-200 installations of KT-1 complex, UZK ”(2011) (supervisor – Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan E.E. Ergozhin). In the course of the research conducted, a test bench and reverse osmosis pilot plant were manufactured. To the level of the maximum permissible concentration, the salinity of the process effluent is brought by additional sorption of residual organic ions by synthesized organic-mineral sorbents based on modified shungites and zeolites.
Under the leadership of the academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan E.E. Ergozhin and Director of Membrane Technologies LLP (Doctor of Technical Sciences A.A. Tskhai) research and development work together with Atyrau Refinery LLP, Pavlodar Petrochemical Plant LLP and PetroKazakhstanOilProdakts LLP (Shymkent): “Purification and desalination of industrial wastewater to ensure recycling water supply” (2013-2018) was conducted. The following research and development works were also carried out at these plants: “Development of technology for pre-cooling and purification of treated wastewater from salt-containing compounds to the standards necessary for reuse for the technological needs of the plant (2016),“ Survey of the water-chemical regime (chemistry) of circulating systems in order to optimize the supply of reagents, develop methods for their automatic dosing and methods for monitoring the quality of circulating water treatment “,” Conducting long-term tests of the technology of a pulsed electromagnet Water treatment with a second reverse osmosis unit for WDM “(2017),” Development of the technology of drainage water for reuse “(2018). As a result of the research, an optimal water purification scheme was chosen, recommendations and technical specifications for the design of industrial water treatment plants at each enterprise were developed.
In 2012, KazTransOil JSC financed two IIC projects. The first project on the topic: “Creating the design of the apparatus for reducing the viscosity of highly paraffin and high tar oils transported through the Uzen-Atyrau-Samara main pipeline” in the amount of 26 million 880 thousand tenge, for 2013 a total 38.0 million tenge was planned. The end result of this work is the creation of a design of the apparatus, which makes it possible to enrich high-viscosity heavy low-value oils with light fractions and reduce the viscosity of the oil and its pour point, while achieving the desired parameters of fractional composition, density, yield and other parameters. The following objects can be cited as specific examples of the use of these indicators: pipeline transportation of oil and petroleum products, discharge of oil cargo from tanks and cleaning of internal surfaces from oil residues. The second project, the customer of which was KazTransOil JSC with the total cost of 26 million 746 thousand tenge, was aimed at carrying out developmental and technological works on the development of an installation for the preparation of drinking water transportation through the Astrakhan-Mangyshlak conduit using intergel systems (scientific supervisor Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor T.K. Dzhumadilov).
The “Technology of production of base oils” project also received the approval of the Scientific and Technical Council of JSC “NC” KazMunayGas “and JSC” KING “, its funding is planned in 2013-2014. The relevance of the development is due to the fact that in Kazakhstan, despite the presence of unlimited raw materials, there is no production of lubricants, and imported oils are used for various purposes in industry and transport (the research supervisor is Dr. K.A. Kadirbekov, Ph.D.).
Under the leadership of the First Deputy Director General of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor U.D. Dzhusipbekov scientific foundations of innovative technology for processing oil-polluted (oil-contaminated) soil with the use of energy-accumulating substances were created.
In accordance with the memorandum between Exploration Production Kazmunaygas JSC, as well as agreements between Ozenmunaygas JSC and the Institute, since 2011, tests of the developed technology for the disposal of oily waste are being conducted.
For the industrial development of technology, 2 complexes for the processing of contaminated soil with a capacity of 20 t / h were purchased (developed at Ecological Safety Institute CJSC, Kursk, Russia).
In 2011-2013 On the test site No. 57 of NGDU-1, Ozenmunaygas JSC carried out extended and pilot tests of the technology for utilizing contaminated (oily) soil for useful components, and since 2014, developed technology has been introduced at NGDU-1, NGDU-2, NGDU-3 and NGDU-4 of Ozenmunaygas JSC with the subsequent receipt of about 500 thousand tons of neutralized soil for further processing into road-building materials (paving stone, paving slabs, curbs, etc.).
As a result of neutralization, toxic waste – contaminated soil – was transferred from a hazard class 3 into a safe commodity product of hazard class 4. An opinion was obtained on the safety of neutralized soil and the resulting products (there is a research report of the State Enterprise “Scientific and Practical Center for Sanitary-Epidemiological Expertise and Monitoring” KGSEN MH RK, State Enterprise “Environmental Research Laboratory” of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management Mangistau region). The technical documents were developed and approved: technological regulations, working draft, EIA (environmental impact assessment).
Tests have been carried out on the processing of neutralized oil-polluted soil for materials for the improvement of oil wells, and the recultivation of degraded lands. An experimental batch of paving slabs in the amount of more than 50,000 pieces was received, which was laid near the middle school in the Rakhat microdistrict of Zhanaozen and on the industrial sites of the division of Ozenmunaygas JSC.
Together with the Kazakhstan Road Research Institute, JSC, 2 pilot sections of the road, 800 m and 1000 m long, 7.0 m wide, were built. Optimal compositions of mixtures of fortified soils and physical and mechanical properties of samples of fortified materials were determined after 28 days of storage in wet conditions (Scientific supervisor of the work is Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor U.J. Dzhusipbekov).
In 2011, work has begun together with Samruk-Energo JSC on developing the technology for producing polymer materials for electrical purposes based on alicyclic polyimide (film insulation for 110 and 220 kV transformers, enamel wires for cable and wiring products), which continues currently (supervisor – Doctor of Chemical Sciences V.D. Kravtsova).
Research at the ICS are aimed at developing ways of synthesizing new functionally substituted mono- and bicyclic azaheterocycles, including methods of both classical organic and microwave (green) chemistry of new substances with potential pharmacological activity of a wide range of biological effects. The obtained results of the intellectual analysis “synthetic design – fine chemical structure – physicochemical and spectral properties – biological action” serve as a guarantee for the further directional search for innovative effective and safe products for medicine and agriculture (supervisor – academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.D. Praliev ).
Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan E.E. Ergozhin and Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor N.A. Bektenov conducted research work on the “Development of technology for producing soil-asphalt concrete mix for road construction” (2015-2017) project. Efficient methods have been developed, compositions for obtaining new soil-based concrete based on local mineral raw materials (zeolite, expanded clay, etc.) and industrial wastes were optimized (polluted soil of Ozenmunayigaz JSC, various slags and slimes of the Novodzhambul phosphoric plant, dry Kashagan slime, coal slags). Experimental samples were manufactured.
The technology for obtaining new surface-active substances based on the processing of hydrocarbon raw materials has been developed at ICS. In the series of sulfur-containing compounds, new highly effective surfactants with flotation and selective properties in the enrichment of sulphide ores have been developed, which are currently being tested in aggregated conditions as collectors and frothers under production conditions (supervisor – Doctor of Chemistry, Professor KB Erzhanov). Innovative research was made in the production of plant growth regulators. The high efficacy of the Akpinol-alpha drug on vegetable, grain, fruit and berry, various tree and flower-ornamental crops has been shown.
